Peter writes this letter to the church scattered across modern-day Turkey (Asia Minor) to people who are suffering for their faith. He seeks to remind them of the truth of the gospel and encourage them to stand firm! (1 Peter 5:12)
Christians were being reviled (3:9), slandered (3:16), maligned (4:4) and denounced as criminals (2:12,14; 4:15).
This suffering caused grief (1:6; 2:19), fear (3:14), bewilderment (4:12) and anxiety (5:7). They were tempted to be ashamed of their faith (4:16) and retaliate to regain their honour (3:9; 2:23). But Peter writes to them in order that, by their faithful stand, God might be glorified (2:12), God’s people blessed (3:9) and their enemies silenced (2:15), shamed (3:16) or converted (2:12). Their lives will be radically different from the lives of those they live amongst.
Peter urges them not to be surprised when unjust suffering comes their way. Instead he calls them to persevere, remembering what awaits them in glory (1:3-5).
