This letter assures us that if we’ve found Jesus, we’ve found the light of the world. The light who came into the world to shine a torch on our sin and show us how dark our sinful hearts really are and how much we need him.
This letter overwhelms us with God’s big and lavish love. ‘This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.’ (1 John 4:10) This is why God’s people love God’s people. This is why God’s people love, not hate. It begins and ends with God.
