Eight lessons on Luke chapters 9 to 11.

In Luke chapters 9 to 12, Jesus continues to reveal his identity while teaching his followers what it truly means to live as his disciples.

Luke 9 shows both the power and the cost of following Jesus. He sends out the twelve disciples, giving them authority to preach and heal, demonstrating that his mission will continue through them. The feeding of the five thousand reveals his compassion and divine provision. Peter recognises Jesus as the Messiah, but Jesus immediately explains that his mission involves suffering and sacrifice. He calls his followers to deny themselves and take up their cross daily, emphasising that discipleship requires commitment. The transfiguration gives a glimpse of Jesus’ divine glory, confirming his identity as God’s Son. He is the one who pleases the Father. Listening to him is how we please the Father.

Luke 10 shifts the focus to active discipleship and love in action. Jesus sends out a wider group of followers, who got to see and do amazing things. But as amazing as these things were, the most amazing thing of all is that disciples of Jesus have their names written in the book of life. The parable of the Good Samaritan teaches that loving others goes beyond boundaries, expectations, and convenience—it is compassionate, costly and inclusive. Disciples live out their love for Jesus by loving those that are easy to love and those that are hard to love. The account of Mary and Martha highlights the importance of prioritising time with Jesus over busyness, reminding us that relationship with him must come before service for him.

Luke 11 emphasises dependence on God through prayer and spiritual attentiveness. Jesus teaches his disciples how to pray, giving them a model that centres on God’s holiness, provision, forgiveness and guidance. He encourages persistence in prayer, assuring them that God is a good Father who gives what is needed. When accused of driving out demons by Satan’s power, Jesus clearly teaches that his authority comes from God and that his kingdom overcomes Satan’s—showing that God’s power is greater than all evil. He also warns about spiritual blindness, challenging listeners to respond to truth with open hearts rather than hardness or hypocrisy.
