Passages: Various from Matthew
Big Idea: Jesus is the King God promised would come.
Ages: 3-4

Ten lessons for 3 and 4 year olds getting to know God's great king, King Jesus, in the book of Matthew.

Matthew has more Old Testament references than the other three gospels. Each time he states that what had happened took place to fulfil what the Lord had said through the prophets (Matthew 1:22, 4:14, 8:17...). He wants his readers to have no doubt that Jesus is the one whom God promised would come. Jesus steps in and fulfils them all.

The young King’s life is threatened in chapter 2, but God’s plan to make Jesus King will not be stopped. No earthly king will thwart God’s plan. And just in case we missed the miraculous birth and the gifts given to the young King by the Magi from the east, God declares from heaven in chapter 3 that Jesus is his Son who always makes him happy. This King is a perfect King, whose perfection is tested in chapter 4 by Satan’s temptations.

This King has to clean up his people before they can enter his Kingdom. Jesus demonstrates his authority as King by calming a storm, walking on water and providing generously for his people.

What impresses this King is faith - people listening to his words, believing and trusting what he says. The centurion, a non-Jew, impresses this King by his faith. Peter, the Jew, failed to trust - he took his eyes off the King and sank into the raging sea.

Although God’s King is welcomed into the city of David, he is ultimately betrayed and the people turn against him - just as the prophets predicted. But this was all part of God’s plan. God’s promised King would be the perfect sacrifice to take away sin. God used the bad plans of men for the good of the whole world.

The unit comes complete with a banner for display and a resource file full of crafts and stories that can be used to create a scrapbook for each child. These scrapbooks, illustrated by the children, will become a lasting reminder for each child of what they have learnt. There is also an interactive take-home craft for each lesson.

Includes two lessons for Christmas.
