Passages: 1 Corinthians 7-11
Big Idea:
We are God’s saved people, who live to give him the glory in everything.

Ages: 8-11

Seven lessons exploring 1 Corinthians chapters 7 to 11.

In the middle section of his letter, Paul’s focus is on their relationships, within the family, church family and their local community. He begins with teaching the church about how they were to view marriage and singleness. Whether married or single, both serve Christ. But singleness brings with it more opportunities to serve - more time, more freedom to serve more people. Paul rebukes the Corinthians for their careless attitude and instructs them to guard marriages. Whether married to a Christian or non-Christian, Paul’s plea, which comes from the Lord, is to remain married.

Paul then instructs them on how to love one another within the family of God. More specifically how to love a weaker brother or sister, whose conscience does not allow them to eat food offered to idols. Paul’s command is clear, forfeit what you know is a freedom for the sake of the weaker brother or sister.

1 Corinthians 9:22, spells out the principle by which Paul lived by - he changed for the sake of others, so that they may hear the good news and be saved. This is the principle we’re all called to live by.

In chapter 10, Paul instructs the Corinthians to learn from the past - the failure of the Israelites to trust God who, as a result, missed out on the promised land;  and to learn from their leaders -  imitate  them as they in turn imitate Christ.

Paul ends this section rebuking the Corinthians about how they are treating one another when they gather to celebrate the Lord’s Supper. They are to come to the Lord’s table respectfully, they are to be at peace with one another, and they are to be thankful.

1 Corinthians 9:31 captures the heart of Paul’s letter to this divided church Everything we do, whether we eat or drink, whatever we do, we are to do for God’s honour and his glory. This is our privilege as redeemed children of God.
