Eight lessons on Romans chapter 8.
The letter to the Roman church announces the good news of the resurrected Lord Jesus who came to save sinners - of whom Paul counts himself as the worst.
Romans 8 is regarded as the book’s greatest chapter because it captures so much of what it means to be in Christ. It begins with the declaration that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ and ends with the declaration that nothing in all creation can separate us from God and his love for us.
This chapter is full of reminders of all the blessings that come from being in Christ. If we are in Christ, our sin has been fully paid for - Jesus paid in full on the cross. Our guilt has been removed - we have nothing to fear.
God’s Spirit now lives in us and has brought us from death to life. He has changed us, and continues to change us to be more like Christ.
Our place in God’s family has been secured - the adoption papers have been signed and sealed by his Spirit. What awaits us is the glory of the resurrection, shared with Christ. As we wait for that future, God’s love for us who are in Christ is seen even in the pain and suffering of life, because God is working for our good even in the bad. And our good is always to be made more and more like Jesus.
Romans 8 addresses the issues of assurance from every angle. God not only wants to save us, he wants us to know for sure that we are saved in Jesus.
