The book of Judges ends with: "In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit." (Judges 21:25) Israel was leaderless and as a nation failed to live as God’s holy people.

The book of 1 Samuel begins with the birth of Samuel, the last of the Judges. Under his leadership Israel is brought back from the perils of self-destruction. Samuel was a prophet appointed by God. Every word God gave Samuel happened (e.g. the death of Eli and his sons). As God’s prophet, Samuel anointed God’s choice for King - first Saul, then David.

Samuel’s rebuke of Saul, To obey is better than sacrifice...(1 Samuel 15:22) is a central theme in 1 Samuel. Saul is rejected as King because of his persistent disobedience (failure to wait for Samuel to sacrifice, disobedient to God’s command to wipe out the Amalekites, then lying about it...).

God’s Kingship is on view throughout 1 Samuel. He closes and then opens Hannah’s womb. He calls Samuel. He chooses the Israelite Kings. Nothing is off limits to his sovereign knowledge or control - even the human heart. David is chosen as King because of his heart.

David’s trust and subsequent obedience to God leads him to slay a giant, defeat countless enemies, respect King Saul as king, even when Saul sins. David has opportunity again and again to kill Saul, but he chooses not to - King Saul is God’s chosen king.

David’s Kingship looks forward to a King, descended from David’s line, who perfectly trusts and obeys God. And whose trust and obedience to God will lead him to death on a cross. And this King’s reign will have no end.

The unit comes complete with stories, pictures, suggested songs/memory verses, games, drama activities, crafts, large and small group activities. A resource pack full of crafts and worksheets is also included.
