At every point of this redemption story, it’s God. It’s his commitment to keep his promises to them. It’s his compassion for them that stubbornly refuses to turn his affection away from them, even in the midst of wilful rebellion and continual grumbling. Ruth is the one who follows through on this kindness, in spite of Naomi’s objections. In chapter 2 it’s Ruth’s kindness to Naomi that impresses Boaz. Ruth has come to take refuge under the wings of the God of Israel (2:12). She has left everything behind, trusting in his kindness alone. Boaz then shows kindness to Ruth (2:13) by offering her protection and food. Finally, Boaz is aware of Ruth’s kindness in choosing him and not other men. All of this is a little taste of the kindness of the God they worship.

But it’s the concept of kinsman redeemer that holds the whole book together. Boaz pays the price of Naomi’s land in order to rescue Ruth from a life of poverty and insecurity. This redemption payment was given, not out of duty or because the law demanded it as he was not the closest relative. This cry is affirmed in chapter 1 where God describes Job as righteous and blameless. The conclusion Job eventually comes to is, if he is innocent, God must therefore be unjust. God refutes Job’s logic. God questions Job’s perspective. Was he there when he made the world? Does he comprehend that this world, although good, is not perfect? That it is full of chaos and danger. Bad things happen to bad people. And bad things happen to good people.

Although the book does not answer the question of why Job suffers, it does make clear that suffering is not always the direct result of sin. Job’s friend counselled the exact opposite. If God is always just, then he will reward those who do good and he will punish those who do evil. They concluded Job was being punished for sins he’d committed. The counsel Job received from his 'so called' friends was resoundly condemned by God. Their logic was too simple for such a complex world and their perspective too limited.

It is such an important topic to address with children, as friendship has the second biggest human influence on children outside the family unit.

The book outlines what it looks like to live a wise life. Unlike Mark and Luke, who use ‘Kingdom of God’. Matthew uses ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ for his Jewish audience, who tended to avoid naming God. Both terms refer to the same reality: Jesus is the promised King, who ushers in God’s kingdom.

Jesus taught through parables—stories that often raised more questions than answers. In Matthew 13:10, his disciples asked, “Why do you speak to the people in parables?” Jesus replied, “Because the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven has been given to you, but not to them…. For this people’s heart has become calloused; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes.” (Matthew 13:11, 15) They were given understanding, while others were not because their hearts were hardened.

Jesus draws on everyday the experiences of the people in his stories. The four parables in Matthew chapter 13 used the experiences of farming, fishing and trade. Jesus told some parables to the crowds, but the majority were told to his disciples.

In chapters 18 to 20, Jesus’ collection of parables explore the heart of God. Every person in his kingdom matters to him. God is generous to everyone who comes to him - no matter when they come. God's forgiveness is incalculable and complete. This collection of parables also explores what it’s like to live in God’s kingdom. God’s people are called to forgive those who sin against them because God has forgiven us everything. Their love for God is expressed not only in their words, but in their actions.

The parables in the final chapters of Luke explore the Israelites rejection of God, his prophets and ultimately his Son. This leads to God’s kingdom being open to people from all nations. Which is where the book of Matthew ends - the sending of the disciples into the world to make disciples and grow his kingdom. The final parables of Matthew teach us about the unexpected nature of Jesus' return. The call here is to be ready, because the hour of his coming is unknown.

When reading parables we can be tempted to ask, ‘Where am I in this story?’ Better to ask, ‘Where is Jesus in the story?
