Passages: 2 Samuel 1-24
Big Idea:
We need a perfect King whose kingdom never ends.
Ages: 5-11

Nine lessons exploring the book of 2 Samuel.

Note: These lessons are yet to be upgraded to the new Kidswise format. Each lesson contains two parts: K-2 is for children aged 5-7 and 3-5 is for children ages 8-11.

2 Samuel begins with the death of Israel’s first King. David remains innocent of his death right up to the end - not even rejoicing in the death God’s anointed (who had pursued him relentlessly for eight years).

David is installed as the new King and moves the capital from Hebron to Jerusalem, the city of David. He brings the Ark into the city (after one failed attempt) and David establishes himself in a palace. David then decides to do the same for God and offers to build him a temple.

God however puts David in his place. God doesn’t need David to do anything for him. It is God, the true King who has done everything for David. David is but his servant. Then God lavishes grace upon grace on David. He promises David an everlasting dynasty. From David’s line a King will come, who will live forever. And this King will be the King we need, one who is without sin.

David is like this forever King, in that he shows mercy and kindness to his enemies. David shows kindness to Saul’s grandson, Mephibosheth, who is both weak and powerless. David restores his lands, brings him into his palace, treats him as family and provides for him for the rest of his life.

But unlike this forever King, David is flawed. Nathan, God’s prophet, exposes David’s sin with Bathsheba and the attempted cover up. And even though David doesn’t deserve it, God is true to his promise - David looses neither his life nor the throne. The rest of 2 Samuel is the effects of David’s sin, as the judgements of both the sword and the taking of David’s wives by others is played out. Israel pays for the sin of the King they had demanded back in 1 Samuel chapter 8.

The unit comes complete with stories, pictures, suggested songs/memory verses, games, drama activities, crafts, large and small group activities. A resource pack full of crafts and worksheets is also included.
